PRESIDENT'S ADDRESSWelcome to the University of Washington and the Multicultural Greek Council! My name is Jasmine Tran and I am excited to introduce you to our community. The Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) was created at UW in 2002 with the goal to bring Greek organizations from marginalized communities under a single, unified council. Since then, our council and the organizations within have worked hard to foster spaces for these communities on campus. I am proud to say that we have grown to be home to 12 Greek-lettered and culturally diverse organizations on the University of Washington, Seattle campus. They represent Asian- and Latine-interests, but are NOT exclusive to any identity. Our family is continually introducing and re-welcoming more chapters as they are founded or being brought back to UW. Although each house has traits that make them notable in their own regard, they are all united under the Council with the three pillars: Community, Culture, and Academics. I joined my own organization, Chi Sigma Alpha National Sorority Inc., in the Spring of 2021 as everyone was easing out of the COVID-19 pandemic. I have watched houses adjust to life online, as well as readjust to life on campus. I witnessed the strength and persistence of organizations as they were challenged with rebuilding their recruitment numbers, planning new and creative philanthropy events, and rediscovering their identities in the aftermath of the pandemic. Being welcomed into the MGC community defined my time as a UW student, teaching me how to build relationships with those who come from different backgrounds but who have arrived at UW with similar goals to represent our cultures. I have learned how important it is to build your own community and lead others into finding their own. Being a sister of my own organization and a member of MGC, I have been pushed to be my best self and contribute to my community. My experiences have taught me important skills in leadership, communication, collaboration, academic excellence, and sisterhood. The MGC community has committed itself to raising funds and awareness for nonprofit organizations that represent important issues, such as domestic violence, breast cancer awareness, and children’s resources. We have centered our communities and hope to continue doing so in this next year. It is important to also acknowledge the roots of our Council. Multicultural Greek life is the result of the work the National Panhellenic Council (the Divine 9) has done to make space in Greek life for marginalized communities. While we recognize the efforts made by traditional Greek life to become more inclusive and aware of its impact on the campus community, the Divine 9 and multicultural Greek organizations are remarkably built on the goals of empowering members to be proud of their diverse identities. As President, my intentions for this year are to support our Council’s organizations as they work to expand their respective chapters, raise awareness about the cultural diversity of MGC, and give back to the communities that have shaped us all. I want to demonstrate that while each culture has their own struggles and history, we can unite under the goal to uplift all underrepresented communities in the university setting and beyond. I am proud to be a member of the Multicultural Greek Council and President for this next year. I hope that this message resonates with those looking for their community during their time as a student, and that this website helps you learn more about us. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me or anyone else on our Executive Board. I wish you well and hope you find the best opportunities for yourself as a student and growing individual. With love and support, Jasmine Tra Mi Tran Multicultural Greek Council President |
ABOUT MULTICULTURAL GREEK COUNCIL
Established in 2002, the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) aims to unify historically underrepresented chapters on the UW Seattle campus and continues to do so today. In the years since the establishment of the council, MGC is now home to 12 active Greek organizations that span across Asian, Latinx, and progressive interests. Built upon the three pillars of Community, Culture, and Academics, members of MGC continually display qualities symbolic of these, while representing the excellence of their respective chapters. As the council expands in size, the Multicultural Greek Council will continue to provide a safe and inclusive space for the expression of diverse opinions and meaningful social relationships. Greek life at UW is made up of four Greek Councils: Interfraternity Council (IFC), Panhellenic Association, National Panhellenic Association, and Multicultural Greek Council (MGC). Unlike traditional IFC or Panhellenic fraternities and sororities that mandate their membership to reside in furnished houses on Greek Row, MGC’s relatively young status at the University of Washington justifies why many chapters do not have permanent residences. Yet, through numerous social calendar events throughout the year, MGC organizations strive to promote an active campus presence while demonstrating the power of unity among multicultural Greeks with the wider Greek and UW community.
COMMUNITYThe Multicultural Greek Council strives to provide all of our members with a home-away-from-home. Through this, despite our diverse cultural backgrounds, the United Greek Council promotes a message of unity amongst our campus, while creating endless bonds between our organizations.

PILLARSCULTURE
Through the celebration and promotion of cultures, the Multicultural Greek Council prides itself over the cultural pride that our members possess. Our council provides the support and resources that each organization needs in order to spread more cultural awareness on campus, while embracing the individuality of each individual.
|
ACADEMICSThe Multicultural Greek Council is composed of highly motivated students with countless dreams and passions that inspire the motivation to succeed. With this environment, each member of our council has the resources and support to aspire to reach beyond these goals and build a platform of networking and communication.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT
The Multicultural Greek Council is dedicated to promoting unity among minority Greek organizations at the University of Washington. We aim to provide a united governing body for these underrepresented cultural organizations on campus. MGC offers opportunities to build community relations, gain cultural awareness, and promote academic success.
